Karen Chekerdjian
"I can draw inspiration from a film, a book, art, or simply from the streets, and perhaps this makes me a little less academic. I don’t start from technique, I start from a dream."
Karen Chekerdjian began her career in advertising, cinema, and graphic design at Leo Burnett in Beirut, later becoming co-founder of one of the Middle East’s first branding firms. In 1997, she moved to Milan, where she completed a Master’s in Industrial Design at the Domus Academy under the mentorship of Massimo Morozzi, with whom she later collaborated as Art Director for Edra. In 2001, she returned to Beirut — her contradictory and transitory native city, to which she remains deeply attached — and founded her own studio, a space dedicated to reflection and the active redefinition of her work.
"I have always believed that a piece of furniture can be more than just furniture. Why not push the ambiguity to the point where you can't quite decide whether to use the piece or simply admire it?
It can be whatever you want it to be. It depends on how you choose to see it, on your story."
Karen Chekerdjian develops a vision of design as an open language, more interested in dialogue and narrative than in defining a precise style.
Her work questions the conventions of form, function, and meaning, giving life to ambiguous objects capable of adapting and transforming according to the context and interpretation.
